About Toby Carvery

Toby Carvery is one of the best-known roast dinner chains in Britain. It is owned by Mitchells & Butlers and grew out of the Bass pub estate, with the first carvery tracing back to The Artichoke pub in Brentwood in the late 1970s. Wikipedia currently puts the chain at around 158 restaurants, though many other venues have changed use over the years.

Toby’s own website describes a carvery of freshly prepared vegetables, hand-ruffled roast potatoes, slow-cooked meats and Yorkshire puddings, plus an unlimited all-you-can-eat breakfast and children’s menus. A dedicated vegetarian and vegan menu arrived in February 2018.

How to read the prices. Prices are in £ and are typical dine-in prices. Where sources disagree we show a range. Delivery apps, airports, motorway services and London sites are often higher. See our Editorial Policy. Always confirm with the restaurant.

Toby publishes its menu per restaurant, so the figures below are indicative “from” prices from a single reviewed pub and may be higher in London, at motorway locations or for takeaway and delivery.

Vegetarian, vegan and dietary notes

A dedicated vegetarian and vegan menu has been offered since February 2018. Listed options include a meat-free carvery (V), a vegan sausage roll (VE), a broccoli and brie parcel (V) and a house salad (VE).

Toby’s main web page does not publish allergen details, so use the allergen guide on Toby’s website or in the pub. In a carvery, food is served from shared counters, so cross-contact is possible. If you have an allergy, tell the team before you order.

Opening hours, booking and locations

Opening hours depend on the pub. Many open in the morning for breakfast (served until about 11am where available) and run until late evening, but times vary, so check your local Toby on the official restaurant page. You can book a table online through the Toby Carvery website, which is worth doing for Sundays, bank holidays and December.

With around 158 sites across the UK, you will find Tobys in many town edges, retail parks and suburban pubs. Use the official restaurant finder to see your nearest.

A little history

Wikipedia records carvery prices of £7.99 in 1991, £6.95 in 1996 and £5.95 in late 1998. The weekday figure today is roughly double the late-1990s price, which shows how much the cost of eating out has risen over the years.
