About itsu

itsu is a UK healthy-eating chain known for sushi, poke, rice bowls, gyoza, bao buns and soups. It opened its first restaurant in Chelsea, London, in 1997, founded by Pret a Manger co-founder Julian Metcalfe together with Clive Schlee. The first branch outside London opened in Oxford in 2013, followed by Manchester’s Spinningfields in 2016.

itsu says it operates 77 shops, with the majority in London and others in cities such as Oxford, Manchester, Leeds, Brighton, Guildford, Exeter and Milton Keynes. It also sells a grocery range in supermarkets, which is separate from the restaurant menu on this page.

Calories, nutrition and allergens

itsu publishes nutrition and allergen information on its online menu, at restaurant kiosks and through team members. Because the food is handmade, portion weights vary, so calorie figures are based on an average weight.

As an example of the detail available, the itsu product page for “best of itsu” (large) lists 510 kcal, 21.3 g protein, 71.9 g carbohydrate and 3.88 g salt. It contains gluten, sesame, fish, crustaceans, egg, soya and mustard, and may contain milk, nuts, molluscs, celery and lupin. itsu also notes that open-plan kitchens mean freedom from any allergen cannot be guaranteed.

Good to know

  • Trace alcohol: sushi rice uses vinegar containing spirit vinegar, the herb dressing contains a trace of alcohol, teriyaki sauce contains mirin and miso soup has a very low alcohol content.
  • Not halal certified: itsu says its meat products are not halal certified, and the sushi rice and miso soup contain ingredients that also make them non-halal.
  • Vegetarian and vegan: options exist but vary by branch, so check the labels on the online menu or ask the team.

Opening hours and locations

Hours vary by branch. Many shops open around 7:30am to 11am and close between about 8pm and 9pm, with early openings in busy commuter areas and later closes at some central sites. Always check the restaurant finder on itsu’s website for your branch.

Delivery is available from many shops through apps such as Deliveroo and Uber Eats. Delivery menus are often priced higher than in-store.
